Social Media and fashion; what you can do with it
Tips to become the fashion influencer you see onscreen every day
Social Media does have the power to make anything and everything go viral. With just one click, you can search for the trends you want, figure out their position and popularity in the market, and even be influenced by them same. It has become even more so now that rather than sitting and sifting through magazines, trying to figure out what’s the hype this season, you would rather go onto your Instagram and Pinterest feeds, just choose a look from there and add it to your ‘inspo fits’. I know because I do the same.
It would be an understatement to say that social media holds only a limited influence on us, considering the fashion world is only going to grow further up the hill with the power vested in them by social media gurus and influencers. And the best part about it is that anyone, with a little bit of videography skills, maybe a sprinkle of editing skills, and a decent closet of clothes can wield that influence. And, we can’t forget having a banging music taste!
If you have these rules in mind, and maybe a bit of everything mentioned above, let me save you the trouble of googling on where to start, as a fashion influencer. There are a few necessary steps that you have to follow, and then you can just experiment and figure it out yourselves as you progress.
Step 1 - This is just a formality to be mentioned but you have to start with creating an account. Please, and I cannot stress enough about this, pick a username creatively, and when you do, think hard if a year or two or maybe five down the lane, you will not be regretting it.
Step 2 - Pick a niche. If you think, “Oh it’s just fashion, I can do whatever I want and social media will be bound to make me famous”, you are in for some disappointment. Moving on, select how you want your content formatted, perhaps you like to do voiceovers and be humorous when you wear clothes, or maybe you have great editing skills and can play around with transitions, or you just wanna put on music and do a little ‘OOTD’ trend. Anything works, but pick one, add your personality to it, and experiment gradually. People love to see raw, unfiltered personalities which they can relate to.
Step 3 - Be consistent. You probably hear this a lot everywhere, offline and online, but it’s because there is so much truth held in it. Social media works on bringing traction with regular posting so start off the page with that mindset. Of course, this is if you want to seriously monetize or create a brand using fashion but otherwise if you are doing it for fun, you can always post once in a while, preferably once a week. Don’t go MIA and then come back six months later.
Step 4 - Engagement. I believe interaction is necessary in creating that unique identity. When people leave nice and positive comments, interact with them. Oh, and definitely do not gatekeep. If there is a piece you really like, just don’t show it if you don’t want people to know where you bought it from.
So what are you waiting for? Go start your page, (or just convert one of your many accounts on Instagram). There was a funny but realistic quote that I came across while trying to write this, told by Grazia’s fashion news and features editor, Laura Antonia Jordan, and it goes something like this “Spotting something on Insta is the modern equivalent of a great recommendation from a friend,”.
Very nice
Very well refined, minimalist read which can be referenced to for day-to-day use as well as for special purposes. Well done!
